Process for Visual Identity/ Strategic Brand Identity

Project phases

While each project comes with its own particular set of requirements, it can be broken down into three distinct phases;

1. Strategy questionnaire or one-to-one call

2. Ideation and Design

3. Revision

4. Delivery

Phase 1: Strategy Questionnaire or One-to-One Strategy Call

In this phase, we determine what makes up the core of your brand. This helps us develop an in-depth understanding of your brand, including your vision, mission, purpose and values. The Strategic Brand Identity package also includes your brand positioning, personality and language guide.

Phase 2: Ideation and Design

We get to the drawing board and start designing eye-catching, purposeful and a cohesive visual identity that helps connect your brand with your audience. (For brand illustrations, packaging and label design, see process below)

Phase 3: Revision

If the client feels that the visuals need revising, revisions are made. While we always take into account the client’s feedback, it is important that it is in line with the strategy and design principles. Edits that do not correspond to the brand strategy or hurt the integrity of the design cannot be made.

All packages come with one free revision (After that, revisions are charged at $95 hourly).

Phase 4: Delivery

In this phase, we hand over all the files and brand guidelines to the client. The Strategic Brand Identity package includes a 30 minute handover call to explain the usage of the visuals.

Process for Brand Illustrations, Packaging/Label Design

Project phases

While each project comes with its own particular set of requirements, it can be broken down into three distinct phases;

1. Ideation and Sketches

2. Design & Revision

3. Delivery

Phase 1: Ideation and Sketches

To kick things off, we get on a call to get an understanding of the project scope and usage for the Illustrations. Then the client sends over the brief which explains the vision that they have for the illustration/label. The brief can also take the form of a document including notes and reference imagery. This is helpful in explaining the general idea and aesthetic to be conveyed through the artwork. A clear and thorough brief is key to a successful collaboration.

Once an agreement has been made on cost and timing, I then start working on rough sketches. The initial sketch is loose in nature and lacks details. The main idea is to quickly communicate the composition of the illustration before investing too much time in a direction that may not be the right one for the client.

Phase 2: Design & Revisions

Once the initial sketch is approved, a more clearly drawn sketch is made. This is done while taking into account the client’s feedback. It may take several rounds of feedback and revisions before the refined sketch is approved. In this phase of the project, the final illustration style to be used has yet to be applied. Since feedback is also taken at the start of the project, this phase of the project comes with two free revisions (After that, revisions are charged at $95 hourly).

Phase 3: Delivery

Once the sketches have been revised and refined to a satisfactory point, the final artwork is produced. The final artwork is delivered in digital forma as high resolution, vector, Adobe Illustrator files. It is important that all revisions to the artwork have been addressed and changes have been made before this phase. Requests to revise the final artwork, while possible, will require more time and may include additional fees.

Pricing

Please note that we do not quote based on an hourly rate. Instead, when preparing a proposal, the entirety of a project’s scope is taken into account. This includes factors such as usage (how, where, and for how long the artwork will be used), the level of detail required in the rendering of the artwork, how soon the artwork is needed and more. We have found project based pricing to be most effective in keeping both artist and client accountable to a clearly defined agreement.

This ensures that the artist does not abuse an hourly rate at the client’s expense and the client keeps feedback clear and concise within a limited number of revisions to ensure that the project stays on course.

Base Rates

As a starting point, the Visual Identity package starts at $4,500.

Most illustration and packaging/label design projects start at $700

Regardless of your budget, we are more than happy to discuss what a collaboration with you or your brand might look like.

Kind words from our clients

The fact that she asked the tough questions to really understand what we are looking for and offered suggestions on what would work and what may not be as effective. I also love the uniqueness of the branding, knowing that what I have is one of a kind
